Our Vision

IFES GraduateImpact

Cross-Current is a program run by IFES GraduateImpact, a team within IFES (The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students) that is dedicated to working with graduates, particularly as they transition from university into working life.

Why Graduate Impact?

We see the workplace as one of the great places where Christians can live and speak as Ambassadors for Christ - people with hope, integrity, justice and love in their hearts. Every day at work most of us enter a unique situation where we are living side-by-side with people who may know little about Jesus. Every day is a chance to share some of his love with those we work with.

At the same time, the transition from university to working life is one of the most challenging, during which time individuals find themselves in new circumstances, surrounded by new people who may hold very different views and beliefs of their own.

We want to help these Christian adults to see the opportunities to serve Jesus and bring him glory in their workplace, and also to learn to negotiate the transition to this new and challenging environment. You can read more about the Cross-Current program here.

What is IFES?

The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students was founded in 1947 when leaders from ten evangelical student movements across the globe came together to form a global movement. Their ambitious dream was to see a clear witness to Jesus Christ established in every university in the world.

Today we are made up of students and staff in more than 170 countries. We are pioneering student witness on new campuses, inspiring each other in campus evangelism, engaging with the big issues in our universities and seeing graduates going on to impact society for the glory of Christ.

People

By God's grace Cross-Current has been made possible with the help of some amazing people. Some run our Professional Groups as Inspirers, some facilitate City Groups, some are part of our team at IFES GraduateImpact and some are current or past members of Cross-Current Groups.

We want to share biblical wisdom that can only be found in people who experience working life in the different professions and cities of the world. Your experience could help others to learn how they too can glorify God through their work.

Here are some of the people who have helped us along the way.

Inspirers

What we believe...

IFES is founded on the fundamental truths of biblical Christianity as outlined in the IFES doctrinal basis. IFES is a non-denominational organisation that brings together Christians from all cultures, languages and Christian traditions. Every four years the IFES Fellowship meets at World Assembly to reaffirm their commitment to the biblical truths expressed in our doctrinal statement.

The doctrinal basis of IFES shall be the fundamental truths of Christianity, including:

  • The unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the Godhead.
  • The sovereignty of God in creation, revelation, redemption and final judgement.
  • The divine inspiration and entire trustworthiness of Holy Scripture, as originally given, and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
  • The universal sinfulness and guilt of all people since the fall, rendering them subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.
  • Redemption from the guilt, penalty, dominion and pollution of sin, solely through the sacrificial death (as our representative and substitute) of the Lord Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.
  • The bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead and his ascension to the right hand of God the Father.
  • The presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the work of regeneration.
  • The justification of the sinner by the grace of God through faith alone.
  • The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.
  • The one holy universal Church which is the body of Christ and to which all true believers belong.
  • The expectation of the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What else do you need to know...

OK - what is the basic idea?

We want to help you integrate your faith in Jesus Christ and your working life. Cross-Current groups aim to help you grow in Christlike character and in your intellectual ability to engage with issues in your workplace and profession.

Is there a group for me?

Some of our groups are focused on different professions and others on different locations. Check out the Professional Groups and City Groups lists to see if there are any suitable for you.

What is the difference between Cross-Current and a conference?

Conferences are single events. Cross-Current is a journey. Every six months or so we spend a weekend together where we learn together, mentor each other and get inspired. We go away, we stay in contact, we meet again and we hold each other to account with support. It's a three-year programme, with the prospect of making lifelong friends.

If I come what should I expect?

Cross-Current groups normally have 12-16 members and 2-3 leaders. Our meetings take place over weekends. Professional Groups normally meet from Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon, whilst City Groups normally meet from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The meetings involve learning together through talks, Bible studies, case studies, discussion and peer mentoring. We also like to have fun!

I'm thinking of joining - what is involved?

Every Cross-Current group is based around 6 weekend meetings spread over 2-3 years. If you join, you should plan to be at each of these meetings because each Cross-Current group is a learning community where we support each other. City Groups meet locally - within or nearby their city. Professional Groups meet internationally, so you need to be prepared to travel (scholarships are available).

What if it just isn't for me?

Sometimes circumstances change, sometimes we try something and it just isn't what we need. You need to be ready to make a happy commitment to the group, so if you're uncertain, we suggest you come to the first meeting of a group, and if it's not for you, then just let us know.

How much does it cost?

We run all Cross-Current groups at cost price and only charge you for accommodation, meals and a small contribution towards resources. This works out at around €100 per meeting for City Groups and €150 to €200 for Professional Groups. For Professional Groups you will also have to budget for (often international) travel within Europe. If you are unable to afford to attend a meeting, you should contact us at admin@graduateimpact.org and explain your circumstances. We hope to be able to help you (although any funds we have are limited and have to be used for those with the greatest need). We do our best to make sure that finances are not what stops you joining the programme.

How can I help?

All our overhead costs - salaries, travel costs, operating expenses, scholarships - all these things which keep Cross-Current affordable to participants are paid for by independent financial support.
